David Matthies, music director of the Capistrano Valley Symphony, has built an impressive reputation as an outstanding conductor, singer, teacher and communicator.
He has appeared as a guest conductor with the Indianapolis Symphony, the Richmond Symphony, the Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra, the Okanagan Symphony and the Abington Symphony and served as interim music director of the Pottstown Symphony Orchestra.
He is comfortable with all styles of music from Jazz and Pops to Brahms Symphonies. He has appeared with symphonies regularly as the preferred conductor for Country Music singer, Kathy Mattea.
David Matthies completed his doctorate studies under Leon Gregorian at Michigan State University where he served as assistant conductor of the Michigan State Symphony Orchestra and associate conductor of the Battle Creek Symphony Orchestra.
A native of Canada, Matthies has received an unprecedented four Canada Council awards for excellence in conducting. His career has spanned a wide spectrum of musical experiences from professional singer and choral conductor to college educator and symphonic conductor. Faculty appointments have included the conducting department at Westminster Choir College in Princeton, New Jersey, Laurentian University (Sudbury, Ontario) and Brandon University (Brandon, Manitoba), and most recently DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana.
Prior to graduate studies, Dr. Matthies spent one year in private conducting studies with Helmuth Rilling in Stuttgart Germany. During this time, he was a singer in Rilling's ensemble, the Gächinger Kantorei and also appeared as their guest conductor on several occasions. In 1992, Matthies graduated with a Master's Degree in Choral Conducting from Westminster Choir College where he studied with Joseph Flummerfelt and was a member (tenor) of the famous Westminster Choir.
He currently lives in Ladera Ranch, California with his wife Carolyn and two sons, Caleb & Quinn.
